Support

Help and contact for Gems, the iOS app for saving and sharing places with people you trust.

Need help with something, found a bug, or want to request a feature?

We read everything and usually reply within two working days.

Getting started

How do I save a place?

Tap the add button, search for the place, and choose whether you have been there or want to go. You can add your own photos, a note, tips for whoever goes next, and tags describing what the place is like. A saved place is called a gem.

Where do my saved places live?

Everything you save appears on your profile and on your own map. You can also group gems into boards, for example a city, a trip, or a theme.

People and following

How do I follow someone?

Find them through search or through the suggestions on your profile and tap follow. If their profile is public you will start seeing their saves straight away. If their profile is private, your request goes to them to approve first.

How do I control who sees my saves?

Profiles are public by default, which means anyone on Gems can follow you and see what you save. If you would rather approve each follower yourself, open Settings, go to Your account, and turn on the private account option. Follow requests then appear in your notifications for you to approve or decline.

Can I remove a follower?

Yes. Open your followers list from your profile and remove them. They will stop seeing your saves.

Boards

How do I make a board private?

Open the board, go to its settings and turn on the private option. Private boards are not shown to your followers.

Can I build a board together with someone?

Yes. Open the board and invite a collaborator. Once they accept, you can both add gems to it, which is useful when several people are planning the same trip.

Your taste profile

What is the taste profile?

As you save places, Gems builds a picture of what you are drawn to and writes it back to you in plain words. It uses that picture to judge how well a new place is likely to suit you.

Gems is suggesting places that are not for me. Can I fix that?

Yes. Mark a place as not for me and Gems will stop suggesting it and will take the signal into account for future recommendations. You can also review and adjust what your taste profile says about you under the preferences tab.

I have only saved a few places. Why does my profile look thin?

The taste profile becomes more confident the more you save. Early on it will be broad and may be wrong about some things, which is normal and improves quickly.

Notifications

How do I turn notifications off?

You can turn Gems notifications off entirely in the iOS Settings app under Notifications, then Gems. If a specific type of notification is bothering you, email us and tell us which one, since that is useful feedback.

Your account

How do I change my email or password?

Open Settings in the app and go to Your account. If you signed in with Apple, your email is managed by Apple through your Apple ID settings.

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings in the app, go to Your account, and choose Delete account. This permanently deletes your gems, boards and profile data and cannot be undone. If you cannot access the app for some reason, email hello@joingems.app from your registered address and we will delete the account for you.

Privacy and your data

What we collect and why is set out in full in our Privacy Policy. To exercise any of your data rights under GDPR, including access, correction, deletion or portability, email privacy@joingems.app.

Reporting a problem

If something is broken, email hello@joingems.app and include your device model, your iOS version, and what you were doing when it happened. A screenshot or screen recording helps more than anything else.

Still stuck?

Write to hello@joingems.app. Gems is a small operation, so your message reaches a person rather than a queue.
